3 John

1–4 The apostle prays that Gaius might be physically as healthy as he is spiritually healthy. Our heavenly Father is on our side at all times, no matter what suffering we face. He sent Jesus as our great physician to heal us from sin and the afflictions we experience in a sin-broken world. He grants faith that is active in love for our brethren and for the truth. • Heavenly Father, grant that we may walk by faith in Jesus and in the truth of Your Word. Grant us great faith and bodily strength to serve our brothers and sisters in Christ. Amen.

5–12 Whatever flattery or intimidation people may use to get their way, there always comes a day when their works are brought into the open—when they will be shamed before God and His faithful. We need not fear the threats and plots of power mongers who conspire against us and would try to harm our reputations and have us cast out because we show love and support for God’s ambassadors. God will bring their threats and accusations into the light. Trust the Lord to protect you when you support the truth. He will deliver you by His Son, who is “the way, and the truth, and the life” (Jn 14:6). • Heavenly Father, fill us with such love for Your ambassadors that we welcome and support all who testify to the truth. Give us courage to stand up against the plots of those who would harm our congregation. We have only one head, and He is Your Son, Christ Jesus, in whose name we pray. Amen.

13–15 John gives Christ’s blessing of peace and extends the greetings of all of Gaius’s friends in Ephesus. John withholds all that he might say about Diotrephes until he meets with Gaius face-to-face. Today, when called upon to tell the truth in any controversial situation, you should exercise similar care and discretion. The peace with which the apostle John blesses Gaius is a peace that none can take away; it is peace not as the world gives, but only as Christ gives. • Heavenly Father, You called each one of us by name through Baptism into Your Son. Grant us the peace that passes all understanding, which is beyond the reach of men who put themselves first. Keep us in Christ’s peace until the day when we have no more need for the Word of God on paper and in ink—for then we shall see Christ the Word face-to-face. Amen.

Jude

1–2 Despite the stumbling faith of Jude’s readers, he begins with comfort and encouragement. He greets the whole congregation as God’s chosen people, even though false teachers exist among them. Today, view and address your congregation as godly and beloved, even if troubled by divisions or false teachers. For the Lord has called them by the Gospel. • Lord, grant our congregations abundant mercy and peace; strengthen their service. Amen.

3–4 Jude flatly condemns the activities of the ungodly, while gently rebuking the godly for tolerating them. He candidly points out that the Gospel itself is at risk for corruption. The Lord certainly calls us to work patiently with those who err. But we can never compromise the Gospel, which is the basis of our salvation. • Master and Lord, save us by Your pure grace alone, and make us diligent for the truth. Amen.

5–7 Jude refers the people back to their catechesis in the OT history of God’s wrath and grace. Jesus Himself condemned the Israelites for their sins and also acted as their Savior. You never outgrow the catechism basics of Bible stories and Law and Gospel, by which the Lord grants constant blessings. • Jesus, You saved Israel from Egypt; save me from unbelief, and refresh me in the examples and blessings of Your Word. Amen.

8–16 Jude mercilessly describes the sins of the ungodly without explicitly naming them or their group. He knows that the congregation will read his letter publicly, in the hearing of these false brothers. Jude apparently trusts that the congregation will take all necessary action to correct the problems. By not naming names, he leaves the congregation to work with individuals at its discretion. This will grant opportunity for confession and absolution. • Lord, You bear with my weaknesses patiently. Grant that I might also bear with my brethren, and may patient teaching lead to repentance those who call themselves brothers but act contrary to the Gospel. Amen.

17–23 Christians, who have the full salvation already delivered to them in Scripture, need not fall into deceptions. We have been warned about false teaching and the deception of sin that leads to death. Likewise, the Lord has taught us the path of righteousness by which His Spirit leads us in the Gospel of grace and peace. • Lord God, keep us in Your love and mercy in Christ until He comes to deliver us from all evil and bring us to everlasting life with You and Your Holy Spirit. Amen.

24–25 Jude emphasizes that salvation is not based on our own reason or strength but is wholly the Father’s work in Christ. As the Lord grants you opportunity, share the message of salvation with boldness, for it truly comes from the Lord and He truly works through that testimony, leading those who repent to great joy. • Lord, grant me present joy in my service and everlasting joy in the glories of heaven You prepared for me through Christ Jesus. Amen.

1:1–3 As John begins relaying the prophetic word that God gives through him, he pronounces a blessing upon all who will listen and take to heart this revelation. Despite this promised blessing, however, people are resistant to hearing unsettling prophecies, let alone acting upon them by making changes in their lives. But take heart! Jesus Christ stands at the center of this and every other Scripture. His first coming resulted in forgiveness and life for you, and His second coming will perfect the new creation. • Lord Jesus, lead me to read, hear, and keep the message You revealed through John, for it tells about my final hope, even life eternal in Your presence. Amen.

1:4–8 John praises the one true God—the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—while simultaneously clarifying the identity of God’s people: they are the “kingdom” and “priests” for whom He will soon come. Given our continual failure to live up to such a high calling, we need to hear again and again the truth of our identity in Christ. When the Gospel of God’s grace is preached, the Church may speak a hearty “Amen” in its conviction that Jesus will return and then perfect our redemption. • Lord, You promise to return soon and transform us perfectly into Your image. Amen! Come, Lord Jesus!

1:9–20 John describes his awesome vision of the risen and exalted Christ. Jesus is such an imposing figure that John instinctively falls down before Him, trembling with fear. We would surely react the same way in His presence. But Jesus is not merely about overwhelming power and glory. He was made like us in every way except without sin. Having overcome death and the grave, He now promises to share His eternal life and glory with us. • “Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the LORD, our Maker! For He is our God, and we are the people of His pasture, and the sheep of His hand” (Ps 95:6–7). Amen.

2:1–7 Jesus encourages the Ephesian believers to avoid false teachers, return to their first love, and be zealous for good works. Such admonitions continue to apply today, even as moral relativism and watered-down doctrine abound. Yet Jesus helps us overcome all these things. Not even death and hell could defeat Him! • “Praise, Lord, for Your apostles . . . May we with zeal as earnest The faith of Christ maintain, Be bound in love together, And life eternal gain.” Amen. (LSB 518:28)

(LSB518:28)

2:8–11 Jesus promises the Church at Smyrna the crown of eternal life if it would faithfully endure the persecution it was suffering. In many parts of the world, the Church is still undergoing persecutions today. And then there are Christians who complain about being inconvenienced for their faith! In either case, what matters is the surpassing greatness of the crown that Jesus will bestow on those who remain true. • “ ‘Come unto Me, ye weary, And I will give you rest.’ O blessed voice of Jesus, Which comes to hearts oppressed! It tells of benediction, Of pardon, grace, and peace, Of joy that hath no ending, Of love that cannot cease.” Amen. (LSB 684:1)

(LSB684:1)

2:12–17 Jesus urges the congregation in Pergamum to repent of the pagan practices into which they were slipping and to follow the example of one who stood fast, even to the point of death. Sadly, compromising the Gospel and committing sexual sins remain problems today. Yet, Jesus offers us repentance and forgiveness also. He even prepares for us a seat at the messianic banquet that never ends. • Lord, I thank You for the godly example of those that surrendered their lives rather than deny Your name. Give me a similar unwavering faith, that I may ever hold fast Your name. Amen.

2:18–29 Just as Jesus warned the Ephesians, so He also admonished the Thyatirans. They must avoid idolatrous worship and sexual immorality. We, too, must remain vigilant against such failures and repent of the times we have fallen short. By God’s grace, we remain faithful to the Word of Christ and so share with Him in ruling His eternal kingdom. • Deliver us, dear Savior, from the deceptive doctrines and practices of this present age and prepare us for the age to come. Amen.

3:1–6 Jesus exhorts the congregation at Sardis to wakefulness and renewed vigor. All Christians need to remain similarly watchful, for we, too, easily lapse into spiritual lethargy and even death—even while having the reputation of being strong. Sustained by the Word and Sacrament, however, we can remain healthy even unto life everlasting. • Alleluia! “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.” Alleluia! (Jn 6:68; LSB, p 173)

3:7–13 Jesus assures the struggling Church in Philadelphia that their faithfulness to Him will be fully vindicated and rewarded. Outside the Church, and sadly sometimes even within it, there is a tendency to look down on those with little power. But the Lord sees things differently. He looks for faithfulness rather than power, and He gives unsurpassed strength—even over death itself—to those who trust in Him. • “Lord, keep us steadfast in Your Word . . . Though life be wrenched away, They cannot win the day. The Kingdom’s ours forever!” Amen. (LSB 655:1; 657:4).

(LSB 655:1; 657:4)。

3:14–22 Jesus rebukes the Laodicean Church for growing self-satisfied and indifferent to the faith. Becoming complacent and self-satisfied about our Christian walk can be as destructive as outright hostility and persecution. Despite this common failing, Christ still comes to us in His Word and Sacrament, granting repentance and forgiveness. He calls us to follow Him into life everlasting. • “O mighty Rock, O Source of life, Let Your dear Word, in doubt and strife, In us be strongly burning That we be faithful unto death And live in love and holy faith, From You true wisdom learning.” Amen. (LSB 913:3)

(LSB 913:3)

Ch 4 John describes the heavenly worship he saw in the Lord’s throne room, where all the saints and angels adore the Lord. Regular worship is a serious matter, required by one of the Ten Commandments and described as the activity of heaven. Sadly, many people do not even feel a twinge of conscience while skipping divine services. Even while present, they may fail to focus on the promised blessing in such services. Yet, Jesus continues to call us back to His presence. In fact, His forgiveness and promise of eternal life is the first order of business in the Divine Service. • Lord, move us to love the habitation of Your house and the place where Your glory dwells, for therein we receive Your gifts of life and salvation. Amen.

Ch 5 The character of heavenly worship powerfully underscores the glory of Christ’s redeeming work. Apart from Him, our fallen world has no hope. However, because Jesus was slain and then conquered death, His people are ransomed and have the hope of glory. • “Worthy is Christ, the Lamb who was slain, whose blood set us free to be people of God. . . . Blessing, honor, glory and might be to God and the Lamb forever.” Amen. (LSB, p 155)

(LSB, p 155)
